And so it begins

1/29/2002

First of all, that's bullshit …

Yeah, that is pretty much how I'm gonna start every column. Why? Because I am here to save face and destroy others. No, no … I'm just teasing. But I am here to react to many of the things my roommate might be putting up on jaylowe.com

Yes, I'm roommates with Mike Vest, a.k.a., Big Red, a.k.a., the creator of The Red Zone. Now how someone as enjoyable as me ended up with a roommate like Red, is beyond understanding. Actually, I'll give the kid a break … he's a great roommate. I'd had some good ones in my day … good old Doug at UGA … man, WHO threw down like we did? I haven't the slightest. But then I'd had some bad ones … but I've sold Red on my philosophy … which simply is, HAVE FUN. I don't know about any ones else's opinion on this matter, and frankly don't care, but Winston-Salem, NC is not the most enjoyable town for a 20-something single person. YES, I did grow up here. YES, I am proud to call this addiction-encouraging town my home. And why wouldn't I be? I had a great childhood here. This IS a good family town. RJ Reynolds did provide my family with the means we needed to have an enjoyable life, and still does. Pops still works at the company as an accountant. Then there's mom … God bless her. She did everything for me and my lovely sister, Marian (more to come on sissy). Mom coached women's basketball at various schools in this town for about 20 years. It was her passion. But in the irony of all ironies, she now plays the role that she so used to despise … she's a ref. So why am I back in Winston-Salem? Did my undergrad and grad school work at the WONDERFUL University of Georgia … spent 5 years in the UGA Athletic Department as a student … in Spring of 2000, I was searching for my next step in college athletics, and Wake Forest came a knockin' … I've been here for two years and enjoy it a good bit, but am looking for something new … something exciting. But in the mean time, I live by the philosophy of HAVE FUN. I'm enjoying my time here by simply doing what I love to do … party with friends, spend time with family, write lyrics for what is left of the band ARGUS (again, more to come), and learn a few things along the way. As you can tell, I'm not going to try and use proper English all the time. I'm big on slang … deal with it. I will try and fill you in with my thoughts on love, relationships, life and friends … and when I'm feeling extra smart, religion and politics. I'll also write down some great drunk ramblings that should be, if nothing else, high-grade entertainment. But most importantly, I'm here to tell you that first off, that's bullshit.
