Is It Self Motivation, Or Just Talk?

8/2/2009

Recently there has been this desire, a need, to be more productive. The past several months have felt mostly uninspired. Certain things are picked up and tried typically to be left collecting dust. It has been this way for years. Other things are avoided out of shear laziness or fear of failure. Do all people come to this point in their lives where they wonder what else is out there? Is this simply a fleeting moment in time which will be laughed about later? Is it an opportunity to become something else, something different?

There are certainly no "change in job" plans in mind. Not even close. However, there is something asking, what can you do? Pick up the guitar you had to have almost 10 years ago. Grab that pad of paper over there and write lyrics, we all know you haven't done that in ages. Remember the idea you had to try and write a screen play? What in the hell happened to it? If that idea sucked, use the one you typed into your BlackBerry last night. Why are you so lazy?

Pick up a wrench. Learn to build something. Make this beautiful house a home. Make it something special. Don't be afraid to fail.

You agreed to purchase the gym membership. Use it. Don't waste it. Find time to take care of your body. Last week there were tons of people in San Diego being active. Running, hiking, golfing, biking. Speaking of, go get the tires fixed on the bike and learn how to ride it.

This is your life man. As much as you rely on people for guidance and uplifting spirit, it can only take you so far. At some point you will have to pick yourself up, dust off and go after it. Haven't you always had this desire to be something better than you are? Prove it. Find it. Do it. Don't waltz through life with this melancholy attitude. It is unattractive and honestly, you are better.

In 2002, when you left Wake Forest for NIU you created a small laminated card which stated the definition of the word discipline. It had logos of the schools for which you'd worked and where you hoped to be. Well, you are only 32. Your journey isn't over. You've found yourself in a city you love. Don't allow it to make you complacent.

Look at this website! You've been talking about changing it for years. This is your first update in 2009. Do you want to continue sharing things? If you want it changed, figure out how to do it.

While having help is always nice, don't rely on others to do things you certainly can figure out yourself.

Spend the next couple of weeks reflecting on this. Begin to tackle things. Don't try and hit everything at once. Make small goals and reach them. Build up to the larger stuff. Who knows where it will take you.
