High school football games make me feel good about myself

10/27/2006

Hide your daughters, close up the shop and run for you life ... two Lowe Down's in one week is dangerous. DANGEROUS.

Exchanging emails today with Newp and Kacie about everything from Newp's old Clemson colored bed room to Optimus Prime really made me smile. It's funny how little things will make a damn dreary day see bright. And yes, for the record, Mr. Tarheel Brian Newport did in fact have a Clemson inspired bedroom as a kid. I know this because I used to kick his ass in Saga games and I remember those horrible colors.

So Doc gave me the "all clear" sign this week. After an ultra sound, I found out I'm not pregnant. Well, that and I don't have anything wrong with my liver. It was a nice relief, and I'm sure the little lady and the family were glad to hear too.

Poor Jerry Springer, being cut from "Dancing with the stars." Yes, I know this and NO, there isn't much on tv during the week. That guy was a train wreck on the dance floor though. It made for great unintentional comedy. Or would that qualify as intentional? There's probably a fine line there.

I'll still call it the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party ... until one of those schools is paying my bills and tells me not to refer to it as such. Georgia is in position to either get whooped tomorrow or really play the spoiler. Obviously I'm hoping for the latter. The Georgia "O" has been difficult to find this year. Maybe they'll be a nice surprise. And Joe T. owes those Gaytors. Big Time.

I never feel better about my organization and event management abilities than when we host high school events. God bless them all. The kids play their butts off. The parents cheer their butts off. You get the picture. But really, when it comes down to it they just are not very organized. We are hosting one tonight, and because of the lack of organization, I've been running around like a buffoon. Eh, it happens. The folks from both schools are really great people, so that makes it a lot easier.

We tip off with hoops season next Wednesday and Thursday. I've relinquished my hoops event management duties this season. I am hoping it will make my life a hell of a lot easier. It will give me more time to focus on paper work and finally get ahead on several projects I've been putting off. And it should give me more time to focus on the wedding, which I'm sure the little lady will appreciate.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone. Oh, and have a few cocktails in honor of that little gathering in Jacksonville.

Enjoying a small moment of clarity

10/22/2006

I know a home football Saturday is going ok when I can take a few moments and fill up the ice bins for our suite level. That may seem like a menial task, but it is something I actually enjoy. It reminds me, no matter how much I'm involved with on game day, every little detail is important. It also gives me a few moments to catch my breath, for clarity's sake, if you will.

Life has been good lately. We are now 4 home games into the season, and the little lady has been keeping me busy with wedding ideas and plans. I suppose all of that can keep the mind busy from time to time, so filling up those ice bins is a good change of pace once in awhile.

It was surreal, amazing and awesome to be back in Athens the weekend of October 14th. Surreal because I saw Vanderbilt defeat Georgia for the first time since '94. Amazing because watching the Vanderbilt football players and coaches celebrate reminded me why I love what I do. Awesome simply because that place is Athens. It is part of my life. That was my homecoming, even if I was in the "enemies" colors. It is home to several really great friends and a monumental number of great memories. It is everything I remember, and I love to be there.

Since my last post, the little lady and her mom have celebrated a birthday. Damn you Vera Bradley. You continue to ravage my wallet. The dogs continue to grow. I remember the days when Sherman was the boss of Salem … all 10 of them. She's been whoopin' his ass ever since. In turn, she's become a brat. I almost typed horrible brat, but she's still damn cute.

You know you're getting old when you are engaged and your doctor tells you not to drink alcohol for awhile. I said to him, "Doc … you know I'm engaged … and I work in event management … and I have two dogs. You are telling me I can't drink? I might as well take a run into oncoming traffic on I-65." Actually, Doc is looking out for me. My liver enzyme levels have been a little high since August. We've been monitoring them, and I've got an ultrasound set for Wednesday. I'm not terribly worried … yet … so for now I'll just do what the Doc says and take it easy. Hell, I didn't even drink until I was 21. I'd hate to know what it would've been like had I become a drinker early on.

If I don't watch another Carolina football game this year, I will probably increase my vocabulary ("Shit" and "Damn" don't count) and lengthen my life. Dear God, please put a fork in the football Tar Heels. I think they've lost the will.

The little lady has been car shopping and finally found what she wanted. The Saturn Vue will most likely be her new car. After some vigorous research on mid-sized or "samllerish" SUVs, she's found one she really likes. Greg, just so you know, I've been promoting the Vue all along. I told her if a big time engineer can drive one, we can too. The trigger hasn't been pulled yet, but I imagine we might be coming back from Atlanta with a new car around Thanksgiving. Nope, won't make it to Tha' Dash for turkey day. Home for Christmas, that is fo' sho'.
