Is it really almost Halloween?

10/26/2004

Are we really only five days from Halloween? I used to love that day, but for me to truly enjoy it again, I need someone to purchase this for me. And look, even my main squeeze can be one too!

Holy crap, that made me just laugh my ass off.

The trip to Athens two weekends ago was solid. I was fortunate enough to spend time with some wonderful people, and I enjoyed tailgating before the game. That is something I certainly can't do much if, but I'm becoming more a fan each time. Doug, Courtney, Matt and Mel all made the weekend very enjoyable. I wish I could spend more fall Saturdays in Athens, but maybe some day I will. I was also fortunate enough to see Junior, Carla and Brian's baby boy. They had him dressed up in the Nike/UGA outfit I bought him back in May. I'm so impressed with myself. I can even dress babies in style!

We hosted our fourth home football game of the season this past weekend. The Dores pulled out win number two over D-II, Eastern Kentucky. It was an ugly game, however I was more concerned with the weather. Rain was on and off throughout the game, but the lightening did hold off. I've never had to clear a stadium, and I hope I don't ever have to. Although, this past weekend would have been the easiest stadium to clear ... a nice whooping 5,000 faithful were in attendance. Sad, very sad.

I plan to see many more football fans this weekend, as for only the second time in my life I will travel to Jacksonville for the Georgia/Florida game. I cannot WAIT. The game will be considerably more interesting since the Gators fired their head coach, Ron Zook, yesterday afternoon. But of course, in an effort to make sure the kids play out the rest of their season, Zook will coach the remainder of the season. Bastard. Just what the Dogs do NOT need. A bunch of punk kids playing extra hard for their now fired coach. I still think the Dogs pull it out: UGA 31, Florida 17.

Get this crap ... I can't vote! This is so frustrating. The first presidential election I could've voted in, '98, I lost my damn wallet. The second, '02, I was stuck at Spry Soccer Stadium preparing for the ACC soccer championship. This year? I swear to crap I sent my registration card in the mail early enough, but the Davidson County Board of Elections claims they didn't receive it. I was PISSED when I found this out yesterday. I won't say who I would've voted for, but rest assured I WILL vote in '06. Dear Lord, I'll be old enough to run for president by the time I vote for the position.

Lots to do before I head to Jacksonville Thursday. Adios kids.

VH and plenty of football

Sorry for the two week delay in posting. I've been a bum. Well, I've been a bit busy, but a good busy. We've had two football games since my last post. One was a great win vs. Mississippi State, showcasing our team's true abilities. The next was a just heart wrenching loss to Rutgers, after giving away a 24 point lead. Yes, it was quite a headache. Regardless, both games went fairly well from an operations standpoint. There are certain issues we are facing, but all of which I believe will be resolved before the next game.

Last Sunday I was fortunate enough to see Vertical take the stage in Nashville. The show was very solid, and probably ranks in my top VH shows. Remember, you are reading the words of a man who has been to probably 40+ VH shows. An addict? Yes. The guys have left RCA records, and they seem to be very pleased with their direction. I don't believe any band likes to loose the "label" security, but when a label doesn't take care of you or promote your album, it is a headache. The guys are taking some time off and then will be back on the road after the New Year. I can't wait.

I'm heading back "home" this weekend. Today, I will leave for Athens and UGA's homecoming game against ... yes, Vanderbilt. Mixed emotions, certainly. But I do know who pays my checks! I will be sporting Vandy colors all weekend, as strange as that will be. The game is on JP in the southeast, so catch it if you can.

The only thing keeping me watching baseball this late in the year is the hope the Yankees will loose. I'm very much pulling for the Red Sox in the east. It is hard to have a real interest when your team is out of the race by, oh say, JUNE! Ugh. And it looks like the Jays will probably loose Carols Delgado to free agency. I'm not sure how much worse it could get up in Toronto.

Most of you remember my good friend Brian Newport, Newpy. Well, the ARGUS group always used to joke about what our "VH 1: Behind the Band," would be like. One of the leading thoughts of controversy was for Newpy to have some sort of addiction. We thought pixie sticks would be a great addiction for Newp to have, so we always came up with these ridiculous ideas of how VH1 would capture a Newpy pixie stick induced tirade. Well, Newp himself has given us a tongue in cheek look at the reason he is no longer with ARGUS. And really, he'll always be with us. He carries our band. With his own two hands.

That's it kids. Off to Athens.

A trip to NC and some ARGUS

We host Mississippi State tomorrow, and I've actually found a few minutes of freedom. It has been over a week since I last updated, and I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been busy. Fortunately, I was able to head home last week and enjoy a little family and friend time.

Last Friday, my sister picked me up at the airport in Raleigh and we headed to Winston. I was able to hang with the family a little bit all weekend, but I was also able to spend a good deal of time with the ARGUS crew. We played a full band show at The Garage, downtown Winston, Saturday evening. The show was a blast, and probably one of our best shows. I felt every played well, and for a change I thought I sang well. We practiced earlier that day, and as we were doing so, something kinda hit me. We've grown a lot since we wrote our last set of songs. As a band that can't always be together, we don't have the opportunity to write songs together. As much as I loved the music we've made, I think I'm ready to write new stuff. I've gone through 2 years since I last wrote a song we performed. There have been so many moving instances in DeKalb and here in Nashville which have touched me, I want to write about them. I suppose I've done some of that here, but writing the lyrics sometimes means more to me.

Regardless, the show was totally enjoyable, and there may even be a Holiday show in late December. If you know me, and you know my love for VH, you will know there is ONE place where I'd rather see VH play than anywhere else. The hint is that place lies in Winston. Well, we might have the opportunity to play the same venue in December. I'll keep you posted.

Over the past 2 weeks, I've been re-watching the original Star Wars trilogy. You other Star Wars nerds may know them as Episodes IV,V and VI. I received them last week on DVD, and I felt like I was 7 again. I grew up on these films, never tiring from watching. The story is amazing, and I think George Lucas is brilliant. On the bonus disc there is a great documentary about the trials and tribulations Lucas faced while simply trying to make these films. It is a very candid and colorful look at the film industry, the mind of Lucas and the nay-sayers who thought the first film would be a flop. What Lucas did create was a phenomenon which would take over the minds and hearts of multiple generations. I would not say I am a sci-fi guy or a comic book guy. I'm not. I don't like Star Treck, the last comic book I bought was when I was 12 and I don't have the sci-fi channel on my remote control favorites. However, this story captivated me. My parents, who weren't sci-fi fans either, enjoyed the story. This may sound totally silly, but I am moved by these movies and how much they meant to my childhood. Easily, this set of DVDs will be viewed many times over. I'll never grow too old for Star Wars, and I look forward to the final installment next May, Episode III. I just wish Lucas would agree to more episodes.

And upon further review, the Ewoks are silly creatures, but they did NOT ruin the Star Wars movies. Yeah, I think they are cute. Sue me.

I wasn't overly impressed by either candidate in last evening's debate. The media is telling me Kerry won, but I felt slightly more impressed, which isn't saying much, by Bush. The attacks on each other kills me. They evade issues to knock each other down. Politics, gotta love it.

Off to the football stadium. Have a great weekend.
