The RV experience

9/20/2004

*** Just remember folks, ARGUS returns to Winston-Salem in just ONE week. Be sure to have brushed up on your lyrics and sing along with us.

So today I met The Undertaker. He was a nice guy but odd to see him in golfing gear. I think I could kick his ass.

Some good lessons learned on my first Winnebago trip to Oxford, MS:

- 20 minutes into the drive, we all learn that when you pull into a gas station big enough for Winnies, you can't just park anywhere. You especially shouldn't just park in the "RV dumping" area. We did that. Some RV veterans were pissed. We waved.

- Nextel clearly has no agreement with the state of Mississippi. I lost service about 2 hours into our tip and didn't have it back until we returned Sunday. Thankfully, none of our facilities blew up.

- Parking in a gravel RV lot immediately comes with a sense of pride, sense of accomplishment. Other RVers are welcoming, you set up shop and you are in business.

- I haven't gone out much lately. You can tell. We had some adult beverages in the Winnie Friday afternoon and night. I "fell asleep" in the captain's chair.

- Captain's chairs aren't very comfortable to sleep in.

- Showering in the Winnie was an experience. I'm just thrilled I got the shampoo out of my hair before we ran out of water. Which we did.

- I never had a mimosa before Saturday morning. I had three Saturday morning.

- The Grove is an amazing site on Ole Miss gamedays. I mean, yeah the sea of tents are nice and somewhat eye catching, but the women ... THE WOMEN ... dear Lord. I thought my head might explode from too much input. It was incredible.

- I'll give our kids a bunch of credit, but too many errors in play calls and on-field decisions cost us. Vanderbilt should have defeated Ole Miss. There should be no excuses. Sad, just sad.

- Brandon won the first ever Winnie Bowl, defeating both me and Mookie in double overtime tilts. Yes, he won but keep in mind he just got back from a two week suspension for loosing four straight games. And we aren't just talking 7, 14 point loses.

- The original Teen Wolf is a really bad movie. Granted there are funny parts and some great lines, but it is awful. They never explain why Lewis is so afraid to talk to Scott after he becomes The Wolf. And what was the deal with Harold Howard and the vice principal's falling out? Why was the guy so afraid of Howard? I mean, hell when Howard turned into a wolf, he looked like a damn Munchichi, not a wolf. Really, really bad. And we don't discuss Teen Wolf 2. That never happened. Got it?

- Adam Sandler's best comedic effort has to be Wedding Singer. Stay out of this Billy Idol.

- Watching the UT/Florida game, I kept hoping for the earth to open up under Neyland Stadium and just swallow both teams. With that said, Florida got screwed. I thought they were the better team.

- I was hoping LSU and Georgia would both be undefeated for the Oct. 2 game in Athens. Thank God Georgia has a week off. They need it.

- The drive back wasn't so bad. We were all tired, but it was a kick ass trip. If you ever get the chance to RV it, I highly recommend it.

A new office and more ARGUS

9/17/2004

Just remember folks, ARGUS returns to Winston-Salem in just ONE week. Be sure to have brushed up on your lyrics and sing along with us.

I've been fortunate to take in some great music the past two weeks. Edwin McCain was in town last Wednesday, and last evening I was able to take in my first Ben Folds show. Both are very talented, and I enjoyed the shows. Next week, at the same outdoor venue, I'll see Wilco. I've only listened to a few of their songs, but I've liked what I've heard. And anything the ephus suggests has to be golden, right?

Later this afternoon I will leave for Oxford, MS. Several of us from the department have taken it upon ourselves to have a KICK ASS time and rent a Winnebago. It will be QUITE the experience. I'm not sure if it will be like road rules or the real world or a combination of both, but it should be a blast. I'll fill you in upon my return.

For the third time since I've been here, I will be in a new office on Monday. Yes, I've moved again, but this time it is worth it. I finally have an office with some breathing space. If you don't know anything about operations and facilities, let me just tell you ... you have a lot of crap in your office. Not just papers and binders, but interesting things like blue prints, caulk for field turf, towels for first aid and various other random items. So needless to say, I've needed the space. I'll finish my move Sunday evening, so next time I write it will be from my new desk.

Things have been good at work, just very busy. We don't have another home football game until October 2, but I've been caught up in meetings about basketball, homecoming, and construction and SEC track and field. Yes, there is never a dull moment. I know sometimes I bitch, and I think everyone has a right to, but I've enjoyed my job more over the last few weeks. I suppose it is because I'm starting to see some results. Nothing is perfect yet, but it is progressing well. At times, I do get down or feel overwhelmed, but I don't think I'd have it any other way.

I am excited about going home next week. There are many Wake athletic events that week, so a bunch of my friends will be around. It'll be nice to see the family as well. I'm sure sometimes they get frustrated that I'm so far away, but I love and miss them dearly.

I'm off to Ole Miss in a Winnebago. I can't say anything else that would be much cooler.

Yes, I did survive game 1

9/9/2004

I wasn't quite sure if I was ready for it, but it came anyway. Game one is finished. South Carolina defeated Vanderbilt this past Saturday, in what was my beginning as the director of operations and facilities. Yes, I was here for basketball and baseball last year, but nothing reached the magnitude of this game. As silly as it may be, and as many people will say, "it's just Vanderbilt football," I know how important it was to have things in order for an SEC football game. It wasn't perfect, but everything went well. I was thrilled with the work of my staff and very pleased with the operational outcome. Only five more to go.

So Edwin was in town tonight for Uptown Mix, and I have to say I was disappointed. Not in the performance, but in the fact Edwin was the opener for Big Head Todd. I'm not here to knock the other band, but personally I was just really looking forward to Edwin as the headliner. He wasn't, and I missed a good portion of the show because I was too dumb to check and see whom was playing first. Oh well. Lesson learned. It is a good thing VH will be here in a couple of weeks. At least I will totally get to act like an ass.

Needless to say, life has been incredibly hectic. The job is trying at times, but I am enjoying it more and more. It is fair to say I was down about things over the summer, but I believe that has to do with the fact there are no events going on. It is all paper work. Now that soccer and football are in full swing, it is nice to walk out and smell the freshly cut grass ... nice to hear the crowds ... nice to be around coaches who appreciate your hard work. Not that anyone is in this for validation, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

For those of you in Winston, be prepared ... ARGUS will be BACK home Saturday September 25th. The Garage has been gracious enough to have us all back. Erich and I enjoyed an acoustic show there back in August, and now for the FIRST TIME ever in Winston, the full band will rock the joint. I am PUMPED. If you are around the town, make sure you head to the show.

Enough for now. I head to Athens this weekend. I look forward to seeing a few old faces and celebrating the birthday of a new face.
