The weekend, it is for everything

4/13/2010

In our house, most weekends are busy. Busy to the point we can not catch our breath and end up more tired on Monday than we were Friday. Some of those weekends are exciting, filled with family and friends. Some of those weekends are boring, filled with housework and mundane projects. Some of those weekends are spectacular.

This past weekend was one of those truly spectacular weekends. The agenda was full, but everything else which fell upon us made it one of those few day spans you never forget.

Courtney had just returned Thursday afternoon from a several day trip to Saint Simons Island. Her mom, sister and our nephew were all in tow for at least part of that trip. Even though it was mostly a girls trip, minus Chance, it was good knowing she was receiving some well deserved beach time/r&r.

When checking the mail Friday, she discovered a nice little note from UGA's graduate school. After several years of trying to decide when to begin a master's program, Courtney received an acceptance letter. She will begin classes this summer and face the difficult task of juggling work and school. Courtney has always been one who vales education and furthering it. Having an opportunity to not only gain another degree but finding an area in which she can see herself growing means a great deal to her. Her technology based graduate degree will give her the abilities to be more creative in the classroom while also broadening her experiences and making her a more diverse employee.

How to celebrate? Mexican food and margaritas of course! We spent time with the Brouilliards before calling it an early evening. Hey, we have a busy rest of the weekend!

Also on Friday we received a call that Courtney's new vehicle was ready for delivery and pickup. We had not been actively searching for a new vehicle but Toyota's 60 month/no interest option was too good to pass up. Unsure of what she will name it, Courtney now proudly parks her new RAV4 in our garage.

The late morning/early afternoon was taken up by work. The annual G-Day game took place with about 30,000 Bulldog fans packed into Sanford Stadium. It was a busy day with numerous donors, former letter winners and suite holders making appearances. Aside from one rather rude gentleman, the day was a success. If you asked our donors and fans about the outcome of the game, everyone would say Georgia walked out a winner. Get it? However, there are still questions to be answered at both quarterback and on the defensive side of the ball.

The game was not the most important part of the day. At least, not for us. We joined several friends at the Terrapin 5K+1. Four miles. On a hot Saturday. Lugging ourselves up several hills. Needless to say, it was tough. The 5K experience has been one that is humbling yet rewarding. Clearly the key is training, something these feet did not complete to the fullest. Right now the key is just to finish.

The beautiful town of Madison hosts another 5K in mid May, so we all may take the short drive south to run past all of the antebellum homes. Not sure the summer months will play host to many 5Ks in this household. That suffocating Georgia summer heat might put a slight pause in the running outdoors. To be determined.

With an already incredible weekend almost in the books, Sunday morning we hit breakfast with the Brachowskis. It sounds like a novel, and it very well may end up being one. This breakfast was by far the most honored and touching moment of the weekend. Matt and Melanie asked us to be the Godparents to both Brannan and Emma. Matt asked, then Melanie chimed in. Then she started to tear up. Courtney followed. The two guys? No way did we tear up ... ok, who am I kidding.

In all of the amazing things that have happened in this life, being asked to be a Godparent is probably the coolest. Moving forward it is no longer about being a selfish individual. It is about caring for another family. Matt has been a dear friend for 10 years now. The friendship we've had and furthered with them over the past two years reassures me they will be some of those friends we sit in rocking chairs with in old age. We love them both dearly and are thrilled to be a part of their childrens' lives for years to come.

The last leg of the remarkable weekend concluded with the Classic City BrewFest. This event is only open to 700 people and comes with a $45 ticket price. Certainly it is not cheap, but it was well worth it.

Courtney purchased the ticket as a Christmas gift. Doug and a few of his work buddies had purchased tickets as well. We arrived around 2:30 and over the next three and a half hours tried small samples of numerous beers. The total beer list for the event was hiding from us, but we became very familiar with several tables.

Old Chub, London Porter, The Chosen Spot and Lenny's Rye on Rye were all winners. There were probably others, but they did not make the blackberry task list for one reason or another. Not sure if there is a date set for this next year, but it will be on the schedule for sure.

The only thing which could have made this weekend better would have been being surrounded by family. All in all, it was a heck of a lot of fun with touching, thrilling, exhausting and jubilant moments all in one. Of course not all weekends can be like this one, but sometimes you find a weekend that can be for everything.
