My Valentine's experience and the freakin' Convo

2/17/2003

A long weekend, but it's finally over.

So I spent my Valentine's Day watching movies. Took in a matinee of CHICAGO. Really great film. I'm typically not big on musicals, but this is up there on my list with Moulin Rouge. Also watched Bowling for Columbine Friday. Michael Moore is a great documentary film director. I really enjoyed his movie, Roger and Me, showing us how the town of Flint, MI, suffered due to the complete move of the General Motors plant to Mexico. Columbine is an intense movie focusing on gun control in America. Watch this movie. It makes you think.

Had hoops Saturday and wrestling yesterday. Events are keeping us busy here ... it was a long frustrating week. We are very fortunate to have our new arena, the Convocation Center. However, the growing pains are driving me nuts.

The facility is brand new (opened in August), and a wonderful venue for college athletics and concerts. I really like the place. My frustration lies with the running of the arena. There are some great people there who work their ass off. No doubt. I question only a few of the workers there, and more importantly, the planning and implementation of their scheduling. This past week we had three basketball games, two concerts and a wrestling meet. Yeah, that is a lot. And everyone there put in LONG hours. But when our events rolled around, the place was in shambles. It was filthy, unorganized and basically chaotic. People weren't assigned to clean certain areas before our events ... or they were, and just didn't do it. Before Saturday's women's game, our staff (an associate AD included) was helping with the clean up. THAT pissed me off. Plan ahead people!!! I know long hours can get on every one ... but there is something to be said for getting the job done, no matter how long it takes.

Again, these are growing pains. I'm hoping it will all be worked out and next year things will run smoothly, but I am weary of that. I just remember being at Wake and playing in the Joel. Sometimes we were treated like the stepchild there, mainly because they knew it was the only place we had to play our basketball games. I fear of the Convo Staff treating us the same way.

I'll give it some more time, but I do hope this gets solved by next year. I want to ENJOY walking into the arena for an event ... not dread it.

Well, back to the real world. Oh, I am hitting Chicago this Friday. Going out on the town with some friends. It'll be good to really see the city at night.

Hope all is well with you kids ... wherever you may roam.
