On this date in 2003, I began my new position here at Vanderbilt. The landscape has very much changed over the past year, as I've lost a great deal of good leadership. People like Carla Williams, Steve Franks, Michelle Kennedy and Jim Booz were all very important reasons for me venturing to Nashville and were constant sources of encouragement and advice. Michelle removed herself from the athletic department in July, and she was the last to go. They all made my life here enjoyable, and I hate they are gone. As I'm sure I've probably struggled a bit since their departures, I've tried to dive myself into this position over the last few months. It isn't easy, but I love the idea of what I do. I love helping these coaches and student-athletes. I love organizing all of our events. There certainly are some challenges we face here, but I try to make the best of those challenges each day.
One year later, I'm pleased I made this transition. I will probably learn more from this interesting set-up than any other in the future. Be it positive or negative, I will learn.
Overly tired and partly intoxicated, I returned Sunday from my trip to Jacksonville for the Georgia/Florida game. My Bulldogs tried to give me a heart attack and hand the game to the Gators in the second half, but we were able to hold on. The entire experience was awesome. I was able to stay on Saint Simon's Island with some good friends and was also fortunate enough to hang a bit with Brachowski and his soon-to-be wife Mel. Good times had by all, I'm sure. And it certainly didn't hurt to play on a beach in the end of October. I love the south.
This week has been a headache. Monday and Tuesday were probably two of the worst work related days I've ever had. I wish it was as simple as saying I did something wrong or I forgot something, but sadly I have to be aggravated with other groups and people. There has been a severe lack of organization when it comes to several of the homecoming issues for this week (we host Florida on Saturday). My basketball credentials came in yesterday and I wasn't happy with their quality, so I had to ask to have them all reprinted (about 300). Our basketball parking passes are still not ready, which another office here oversees. All of these things, and several smaller facility issues, came crashing down on me the past two days, and it was almost a bit much to take. It isn't a matter of not being able to handle things or knowing how to handle them the proper way, it is a matter of just being totally frustrated by the lack of work on some other peoples' part. No need to point fingers, but I just have to vent.
So we have the same President for another four years. Some of my democrat friends are just blown over at the fact America is happy with the way things are right now. I'm not sure it is that, but more so a lack of decent options. I don't choose a party. There are things I disagree with in both. Had I been able to vote (see last week's Lowe Down), I would have voted for Bush. I do not feel Kerry was a strong enough candidate for President. Obviously many felt he was, as the vote was another close one. I feel more of the country would have leaned toward the democratic side if there were a better option. There wasn't, and so we have Bush for another four years. It will be interesting to see how he leaves things when he is done.
All right, so a Brad Paisley concert in our gym Friday night and a home football game vs. Florida Saturday. I wish that it was as simple as it sounds, but I will probably be a grumpy bastard the next few days. Don't take it personal.
I hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween, and don't forget to watch the NIU Huskies vs. Toledo November 11 on ESPN.
